Group Financial Controller

Role Summary
The Group Financial Controller will take full ownership of all financial activities across a group of three companies, ensuring robust financial control, compliance, and insightful reporting. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a hands-on leadership role combining day-to-day financial management with strategic and commercial input. The role is central to decision making, business planning, and long-term growth. Success in this position will be defined by accurate financial management, strong controls, and the ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable insight.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis across the group
- Manage all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable and receivable, bookkeeping, reconciliations, and general ledger management
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness
- Provide financial insight and commercial advice to the Managing Director and senior leadership team to support strategic decision making
- Develop, monitor, and report on KPIs, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to improve performance
- Oversee fixed asset registers, stock adjustments affecting cost of sales, and monthly accruals and prepayments
- Manage intercompany invoicing and recharges, ensuring clear audit trails and supporting documentation
- Monitor and forecast cash flow, advising on short and long-term liquidity and funding requirements
- Manage statutory obligations including Companies House and HMRC submissions, and liaise with external accountants on VAT, tax, and year-end processes
- Design, implement, and maintain robust financial controls, policies, and processes to ensure compliance and safeguard company assets
- Identify and implement process improvements, efficiencies, and system enhancements, including automation where appropriate
- Support wider business initiatives such as tenders, supplier negotiations, business transformation projects, and potential acquisitions or expansions
- Lead, manage, and develop a small finance team, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management in a positive and supportive environment
Key Requirements and Skills
Essential Requirements
- Fully qualified accountant (CIMA or ACCA)
- Proven experience in a hands-on financial controller or senior finance role
- Strong technical accounting knowledge across management accounts, statutory reporting, and controls
- Advanced Excel skills, including financial modelling and analysis
- High level of proficiency with accounting software, Xero experience essential
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a commercial mindset
- Ability to work both independently and as a leader of a small team
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- Detail-focused, process-driven, and proactive in identifying improvements and cost-saving opportunities
Desirable Requirements
- Experience with SIMPRO or similar operational finance systems
- Experience supporting multi-entity or group structures
- Involvement in business transformation, system implementation, or growth projects
