Although sometimes treated with suspicion, social media revealed itself to be a self-regulating force for good during the Olympics, according to an employee security awareness consultancy. Twitter was used first for keeping the opening ceremony a secret, and then to expose and track down the perpetrator of malicious messages to athlete Tom Daley.
A new report on the impact of social networks on the Olympics, published by The Security Company at http://www.thesecurityco.com/news/expert-comment/social-media-and-the-olympics/, examines the trend.
Ruth Pooley of The Security Company says: “Malicious comments have in the past tainted services like Twitter. However, the angry reaction of the public online sent a clear message that the spiteful can no longer expect anonymity on social networks.”
