CSyP landmark

by Mark Rowe

The CSyP (Chartered Security Professionals) register has reached a landmark after eight applicant interviews were held in June. The CSyP has its 250th registrant, Jane Gyford.

Jane, pictured, has 30 years policing experience and is Cambridgeshire Deputy Chief Constable. Earlier she was a Commander in the City of London Police with responsibility for all policing operations and investigations and protective security. She led a major transformation programme for the force along with the Secure City programme to design a future-proof city and police force in line with the 2025 Policing vision. Jane moved to the City of London from the Met, where she served for 24 years. She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration.

She said: “Being recognised for professional strategic aptitude is both humbling and motivating. CSyP is an exceptional platform to address complex issues within the security industry. One of the many reasons I applied is that Chartered Security Professionals are notably forward thinking around generational diversity. The CSyP Secure Futures Programme looks at initiatives for the new generation and generations to come, which, to my mind, is where the focus needs to be. How future generations see policing and security is different, and if we do not listen to these views and understand needs, skills, culture and opportunities we are in danger of losing currency for the future. Understanding and embracing generational diversity is critical for our future, but specifically in the realms of technology, digital and cyber security challenges both nationally and internationally.

“My three national portfolios of Disaster Victim Identfication, Casualty Bureau and Excess Deaths attract national and international strategic partnership working. CSyP is clearly progressive within this international medium and I intend to use my strategic and tactical experience to develop future solutions and tackle issues faced by the security industry. Finally, I am extremely proud to be the Deputy Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, which is currently at the forefront of new innovations for both the UK and global safety and security, and I am excited to have the opportunity to create an amity between local force, national policing and the security industry.”

Her career spans many roles across public protection/safeguarding, national counter terrorism/domestic extremism intelligence, child abuse and sexual exploitation, anti-corruption proactive investigations, homicide and major incident inquiries, specialist firearms and organisational change. She is leading on the delivery of the Chief Constable’s vision and strategy for Cambridgeshire including driving change, transformation and continuous improvement, learning culture and operational efficiencies. Her role also includes workforce planning and professional standards and creating the Strategic Threat & Risk Assessment (STRA) process and supported financial planning.

About CSyP

The Register of Chartered Security Professionals is a professional register launched in 2011, mandated in the Royal Charter granted to the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals (WCoSP) in 2010. The Register is administered by the Security Institute on behalf of the WCoSP.

Chartered Security Professionals are required to show five core competency skill sets – security knowledge, practical application, communication, leading and professional commitment. Each also needs to be making a strategic impact to the development of security practice. Visit www.charteredsecurityprofessional.org.
