Now on desks is the September 2022 print edition of Professional Security Magazine – the premier source of news and views about the private security industry in the British Isles.
We bring you one of the longest articles we’ve ever done – so long, we’ve split it into three parts. It’s long for a reason – we were the guest of Frank Cannon, site security manager at Hinkley Point C (HPC – pictured, a G4S CCTV column powered by solar, at a roundabout outside the entrance), the new-build nuclear power station on the Somerset coast near Bridgwater that we visited in spring 2018.
As if the work of protecting one of the country’s major building sites – only HS2 from London to Birmingham comes close – is not enough, HPC had covid to deal with, which in security terms meant (among other things) managing access and egress to the site, while searching the thousands of workers, and not causing delay to a project unavoidably knocked back by the pandemic. Frank’s hosting a gathering of the Security Institute at HPC on September 6, for guests to see for themselves.
We feature a new football season – that has seen the football authorities in England and Scotland promise action against spectators who break stadium rules by throwing flares; except that some fans wasted no time in ignoring the announcements, and carried on as they like.
We’ve taken a first look at a sector that may be new to some, but already used by others; self-storage. Whether it’s purpose-built facilities that have switched on to remotely monitored CCTV, as a selling point to customers, or a few containers in a farmer’s field, self-storage is a booming sector, we hear.
We hear also from the UK official Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) on its supply chain security guidance, Protected Procurement, suggesting collective and co-ordinated action to mitigate for and overcome future shocks – whether due to crime or other things, such as a pandemic – to your supply chain.
We speak to Richard Aitch, the long-time close protection man who’s about to bring out a second, longer edition of his textbook about and for CPs. Looking back at the ST Manchester show in July, we offer a digest of the opening talk from the conference by NHS emergency planning man Alan Cain, of interest whether you are based in the Manchester region or have planning and exercising on your plate as a security manager.
Plus Professional Security MD Roy Cooper’s monthly gossip for manufacturers and distributors; the newly-announced finalists of the Women in Security (WiS) 2022 – winners to be named at a dazzling night on the South Bank in London on Wednesday, September 14; and a look with trainer Nicole Vazquez at her Lone Worker Safety Expo, in London on October 11.
