Talent of the security industry’s apprentices has been recognised by the British Security Industry Association’s Annual Apprentice Installer Awards 2008.
From submissions, the following winners were chosen: Richard Atherton of Chubb Electronic Security Systems Ltd (overall winner); Daniel Hayward of ADT Fire and Security plc (national winner); and Andrew Sweeney of SIM Ltd (national winner). The awards were presented at the Association’s Annual Lunch held on July 16 at the London Hilton, Park Lane.
David Dickinson, BSIA Chief Executive, said of this year’s worthy winners: "Each year our winning apprentices demonstrate enormous commitment and potential in their work as they progress with a career in the industry. Their professionalism and pro-active approach with both customers and colleagues is testament to the contribution that installers make to effective security systems. BSIA members are always keen to encourage young people and this year’s winners are yet another example of the high standards which exist in the private security industry."

Winners
Richard Artherton, Chubb Electronic Security Systems Ltd (overall winner)
Richard Artherton, 21, has demonstrated so much progress in his own apprenticeship that he now mentors new apprentices and provides support at the Norwich branch on engineer training. For the last few months, Richard has taken on the role of a full engineer and has been active in helping to integrate other engineers into the branch during the national re-organisation, also volunteering to be available to service engineers during and after working hours. Working as a special constable in his free time, Richard is a valued asset to the Chubb team in Norwich.
Daniel Hayward, ADT Fire and Security plc (national winner)
Daniel Hayward, 20, has always been interested in pursuing a career in a technical and practical environment which allowed him to use his own initiative, and as such begun a course in electrical installation and was accepted as an apprentice with ADT Fire and Security plc. After two years, Daniel is already a well-respected member of his team who uses his training effectively to ensure customers receive a professional service.
Andrew Sweeney, SIM Ltd (national winner)
Andrew Sweeney has demonstrated huge potential on an apprenticeship scheme for the electronic security installers, SIM Ltd. Andrew decided to pursue a career in the electronic security industry after he had an initial interest in the rise of CCTV usage in the UK. Since then, he has become proficient beyond his years in the programming and diagnosis of security systems, implementing knowledge he has gained.
