Several ASIS members were among those who died in the September 11 attacks.
On September 11, more than 5,000 people died and thousands more injured in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. Among the confirmed dead and missing after the suicide attacks were six members of the American Society for Industrial Security, ASIS, all of whom worked in the World Trade Center complex in Manhattan. They included Richard Rescorla, a CPP (Certified Protection Professional), aged 62, who was first vice president of security for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Rescorla, a Cornishman who went to America as a young man, was among those singled out for his heroism during the nationwide America: A Tribute to Heroes broadcast. John O?Neill, an FBI expert on terrorism, told a conference in 1997: ?I think interesting times lie ahead. Unfortunately, I cannot predict that no Americans will be injured or killed as a result of a terrorist attack.? An ASIS member, he died in the WTC on September 11 in his second day in a security post at the building. See www.asisonline.org.
