A 28-year-old woman has become the first shoplifter to be banned from entering Pontypridd Town Centre as part of a Crime-Related Anti-Social Behaviour Order (CRASBO), report South Wales Police.
Persistent shoplifter Carly Davies was made the subject of the order at Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of seven shoplifting offences.
Items she has recently stolen include jewellery, children’s toys, bicycle pedals, hair gel, a pack of refuge bags, and a shower curtain.
The 12-month order bans her from entering Bridge Street, High Street, Taff Street and Pontypridd Town Centre between 9am and 6pm.
South Wales Police applied for the order which, if breached, carries on conviction a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or a fine or both.
Inspector Lee Porter, head of Taff Neighbourhood Policing, said: “This individual has been the subject of much concern among traders and this CRASBO should serve as a deterrent to anyone who is engaging in similar sort of behaviour
“Our role as police is to protect the public and make them feel safe when they visit, work or socialise in Pontypridd Town Centre.
“We will not tolerate shoplifters thinking they can come here to intimidate and take advantage of honest hard-working shopkeepers.”
Cllr Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Safer Communities, said: “A significant amount of work continues in Pontypridd as part of our work across the County Borough to ensure our town centres remain safe, enjoyable places for all.
“The Business Crime Reduction Partnerships have seen crime-fighting agencies and traders join forces to deal with offenders, which has led to a number of individuals being banned from all member premises because of their behaviour.
“The securing of this CRASBO is a key milestone in this work and hope it sends a clear message to other offenders that we have a zero tolerance approach to such crime.
“I also hope it serves as reassurance to visitors, residents and businesses in Pontypridd that work continues to ensure it remains a safe place.”
