Newark-based Newgate have provided manual security barriers to keep spectators and traffic clear of Ground Zero – the mountain of rubble once New York?s World Trade Center. It is the gate manufacturer?s first US contract. Newgate was approached by an American construction firm, who found them on the internet. Davis and Partners of New York, the general contractors responsible for potential redevelopment of the site, then ordered four manually-operated security barriers. These were made by Newgate and dispatched to the US as air freight. The barriers are now in operation and will be used by the New York Police Department and US Marines to control the public and regulate construction traffic. Newgate Development Manager, Rachel Maidment, said she believed the order was necessary because US security firms were swamped by demand after September 11.
