The Metropolitan Police are launching a new website aimed at assisting those who have been bereaved.
This website is a source of information about all aspects of a loss, specifically designed for those who have suffered a recent bereavement.
‘Bereavement information for families and loved ones’ is not only relevant to those whose death is being investigated by the police, but is helpful to anyone who has suffered a loss and wishes for more information. The site offers advice about the emotional, legal and practical impact of a death, suggesting strategies that may help cope with grief. This includes ideas of how to create a fitting memorial to loved ones and provides links to other organisations that offer advice on grief and loss.
On a practical level, the site deals with everyday occurrences which are often overshadowed in the light of bereavement, but which can often bring further grief. Advice includes how to put a stop to mail arriving that is addressed to those who have died, wills and how deaths overseas are dealt with.
The Met’s Family Liaison Advisors have developed this new site as they realised that there was a need for this information to be accessible in one place on the web.
Commander Simon Foy of the Metropolitan Police Homicide and Serious Crime Command and National Lead for Family Liaison said: "We are delighted to offer this website as yet another source of information for people who, in their grief, need easy and accessible explanations as to how to deal with death.
"This website provides a much-needed service to all those who have suffered bereavement and we hope that it helps to clarify many of the concerns people express over the loss of a loved one."
The website also aims to de-mystify the process of inquests and the role of the coroner, so that those suffering a bereavement can understand the reasons for these procedures and appreciate they are not intended to cause further pain.
