Body Cam Trial

by msecadm4921

Police in Nantwich are carrying out a pilot using new technology to assist with tackling crime in Nantwich….

The cameras are the size of a mobile phone and clip onto stab vests. Officers are using the cameras attached to their body armour to record video and audio footage when attending incidents.

Officers out on patrol with the cameras will have the opportunity to set the camera to record when they come across a live incident. This could be a powerful tool in the fight against serious crime and anti-social behaviour.

Nantwich NPU Inspector Dave Smithers said: "Selected officers will be kitted out with the CCTV cameras which they will wear on their body armour. The trial will give us an opportunity see if the body cameras benefit the neighbourhood teams. I see the benefit to us and the community as two fold. Firstly, as a crime prevention method for the small minority of people wanting to cause trouble. They will be aware that their actions could be recorded by officers at any time of the day. Secondly they could also be used as an evidence gathering tool, the recording being used if appropriate for any offences disclosed."
