Fear of being robbed, mugged or burgled in East Brighton has plummeted according to research conducted by opinion pollsters MORI.
The survey findings are part of an independent study commissioned by Government and follow a series of major initiatives introduced by regeneration agency, eb4U, to combat crime and help residents feel safer.
These include an award-winning community policing project, built on a partnership of eb4U’s Community Safety Team and Sussex Police, the introduction of Neighbourhood Wardens and Police Community Support Officers providing a visible and reassuring presence on the street, and CCTV cameras.
eb4U’s Community Safety Team has also gained national recognition for its successful and pioneering use of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs).
The reduction in the fear of crime reflects a 34pc reduction in reported crime in the area over the past five years, it is claimed.
What they say
Alan Teague, Chair of the Board of Directors for eb4U said: “It is very satisfying to see that local people are less worried about crime in East Brighton and feel safer in their homes. These results show that the many community safety initiatives operating in the area are having a positive impact. However it is important that we don’t stop here, we still have lots to do but results like these are a great motivation."
