Card Winners

by Msecadm4921

UK card companies were among the winners at the Advanced Card Awards 2002 in London on April 23.

TSSI triumphed in the best healthcare implementation category, for their NHS occupational health smart card scheme. It uses a personalised microprocessor smart card to hold pre-employment information on doctors in training, securely and confidentially. Data on the card can only be accessed by authorised staff, and only updated in the presence of the card holder. The system is being rolled out to every hospital trust in England, to simplify admin and improve record-keeping. According to the judges? citation, ?this accreditation and security scheme offers great benefits to health service administrators and patients, as well as tremendous potential for a wider roll-out?.

Meanwhile, the MIPS best mobile commerce and communications implementation award went to ORGA Card Systems (UK) for wIQ. It works as a gateway between mobile operators, service providers and their subscribers. It supports content-based billing for services accessed via mobile phones. Mobile operators can set up prepaid or postpaid shared-revenue models with external service providers. For example, the Chilean wireless network operator ENTEL PCS uses wIQ to enable customers to pay for metro tickets with a cell phone. Visit www.orga.com.

In the best security or biometrics implementation, ActivCard and SchlumbergerSema took the award for their Common Access Card Program at the US Department of Defense. The scheme includes more than four million smart cards – to military personnel, civilian
employees and selected contractors around the world – for use as multi-application identity cards and security badges at 900 sites worldwide. The judges praised for smart card for containing identity credentials, personal and other data on one identity badge. Visit www.activcard.com.
