CCTV Idea

by Msecadm4921

In Lancashire, PC Dan Whitaker is behind an idea aimed at reducing the fear of crime in local retail outlets.

The scheme itself is a relatively simple one with shops displaying posters in prominent positions saying they will not serve customers wearing any headgear. The posters have been delivered by PC Whitaker and Police Community Support Officers Rob Park and Linda Matthews. Codenamed ‘Operation Hat, Hood and Helmet’ the scheme is designed to deter would-be criminals.

PC Whitaker said: "CCTV images show that the majority of criminal acts that take place in shops is undertaken by people wearing some form of headwear.

"As a result of that police and local retailers have joined forces to come up with this scheme where if anyone ignores the rule they will not get served. It is as simple as that."

He added: "The response I have had from local traders has been excellent with 99pc of people thoroughly behind the idea. It will be a god scheme for them but it has also been god for the police because it has given us a chance to go into the local retail community and pass on some crime prevention tips and establish some good relationships."
