China Games Meet

by Msecadm4921

The China Security and Protection Industry Association hosted The International Forum on Strategies in Public Security and Protection, on December 1, 2004. Written by Tay Incekara.

The event was sponsored by RC Group (UK listed Biometrics Group in Hong Kong) and Beijing Aurine (local security company), and was held at the DiaoYuTai Guesthouse in Beijing.

The forum focused on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games security issues and allowed industry players to liaise, exchange views and explore cooperation opportunities. The guest speakers were provided by Samsung (Kwansoo Kim), GE (Jeffrey Yang and Alice Pu) and Panasonic (Gary Hardesty), official Olympic Security sponsors.

The meeting heard that players in the security industry agreed that biometrics will feature heavily in tomorrow’s security deployments. The Viisage Face Finder was premiered by RC Group at the forum. The system is able to memorise and recognise over 10,000 faces, and maps 1700 points in each face, it is claimed. It was demonstrated that the Face Finder only needs one second to take 15 pictures from different angles and can, according to different needs, trace the individual’s facial differences. Fake hair, glasses, make-up and other disguises were unable to fool the system and recognition proceeded as normal through the Infra-red camera, it was claimed.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 events the threat of terrorism has become a topical global concern that needs to be addressed, the meeting heard. Security needs reverberating from the Olympics will include immigration, hotel, building control and monitoring issues, that need solutions. Guests included various biometric firms, and representatives from a number of Chinese Government departments.
