Thames Valley Police in West Berkshire have hailed a crack-down on shoplifting offences over the Christmas period.
Sgt Andy Bone from the Newbury town centre neighbourhood team said: “The Christmas period is a time when we often see a rise in this type of crime, so we carried out an operation that proved very successful and resulted in a very high detection rate.
The operation ran daily throughout December. Local officers work alongside special constables and the mounted section to conducted high-visibility patrols in the town centre and the retail park.
A total of 23 people were dealt with for shoplifting offences over this period. Some were issued with cautions, penalty notices and restorative disposals.
