Claim Line

by msecadm4921

Southampton City Council has joined a scheme to combat bogus or exaggerated claims.

Residents can phone a 24 hour FraudLine to report anyone suspected of making a fraudulent insurance claim.

With the emergence of so-called `compensation culture`, loss adjusters Cunningham Lindsey UK Ltd, developed a national insurance fraud hotline for anonymous reporting.

Over the past three years, the average cost of liability insurance claim settlements for the city council was £1.39m a year. The council recognises that many of these are genuine claims, but wants to tackle all those that are dishonest and protect the law-abiding taxpayer.

Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: "I am delighted that the council is acting to combat fraudulent claims. These are not victimless crimes; they cost the taxpayer dearly and mean that money is taken away from important council services. I welcome this excellent initiative and I hope that it proves successful."

FraudLine was set up in December 2003 and 37 other local authorities across the country have signed up. These towns and cities report an average of 25 to 30 percent reduction in the number of claims compared to previous years without the scheme.

The confidential telephone line is 0800 328 9270.
