Police in South Tyneside are using a metal detecting arch at two South Shields nightclubs: Vogue, on Ocean Road, and Dusk, on Coston Drive.
This is part of South Tyneside Area Command’s local initiative against violent crime working under the banner of Operation Unicorn. The arch, the same as metal detectors used at airports, can detect if anyone is carrying a knife or weapon. Club-goers will have to pass through the arch as a condition of entry.
While the clubs have no history of knife-related incidents, they are keen to work with police to promote good behaviour and public safety. Detective Inspector John Bent said: "Working closely with licensees in this way will not only combat violent crime but will also offer reassurance to people that we want to ensure the safety of those enjoying South Shields’ nightlife.
"Using metal detectors in this way will not only bring offenders to light, but will hopefully also deter those who would normally carry a knife from doing so. Our officers will reinforce the message that illegal possession of knives and weapons is never acceptable and will lead to the arrest and prosecution of the individual concerned.
"The two venues were keen to take part in this initiative as it provides reassurance to their patrons. We’d like to thank them for their support. We also hope that the public will be reassured that we are acting on any concerns they may have through this action while also making sure they know they do live in a safe area.
"I would like to reiterate that in South Tyneside we do not have a significant problem with knife crime, unlike some other areas of the country and we are committed to keeping it this way."
Other initiatives as part of the campaign, running throughout September, include pub walk-throughs and seeking banning orders for those who commit offences by behaving in a disorderly or violent manner at licensed premises.
