Young people from a London estate showcased their film about gun crime to an audience of policy makers, MPs and journalists.
‘The Ends’ is the result of a six-month project at crime reduction charity Crime Concern’s Kickstart project in Southwark, south London.
Kickstart programme manager and executive producer Soye Briggs said: “Three of our project workers have been held up by guns. Gun crime is on our doorstep in this community. It is here and now and we have to address it. The commitment and creativity shown by the young people involved in making this film proves that given the right opportunities the young people of Southwark can make a truly positive contribution to the community.”
The nine-minute film was written, directed and acted by 30 young people from Kickstart’s youth inclusion project who have had no previous film or acting experience.
The film’s director, Justin Edgar, said: “This is an authentic slice of south London life – the kids playing the characters have very real experiences like the ones in the film.”
The youngsters, who all live in Southwark, worked with independent film makers Link Productions. The film will be used in schools and community halls throughout south London to spread the message about the dangers of gun and violent crime.
