Heathrow Airport has joined forces with charity Crimestoppers and Heathrow Police in the effort to make the airport safe and crime-free.
Using the free telephone line (0800 555 111), Crimestoppers allows individuals to pass on information about criminal activity to the police while protecting the anonymity of the caller. Airport staff have received letters and brochures explaining how they can play a role in discouraging crime. Information about the service has also been communicated through road shows that visited staff areas around the airport.
Mick Temple, Managing Director, said: โWe all know that Heathrow is an exciting and vibrant place to work. With 67 million passengers travelling through the airport last year and around 68,400 staff employed here, the pace of life is fast. We need to ensure that we promote a culture where staff feel able and supported to pass on information about crime, or unreasonable behaviour, without fear of retribution. For many Heathrow is a dynamic environment in which to work, but for a small minority, it also provides an opportunity to try and get away with anything from anti-social activity to serious acts of crime. This is not something any of us should be expected to tolerate.โ
This initiative has been supported by British Airports Authority (BAA) charity, the Communities Trust, and has been implemented across Heathrow, Gatwick and Standsted at a total cost of around £40,000. The British Airports Authority, which owns and operates Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, reports that one-third of its staff work in security.
