The Business Crime Reduction Centre is delivering a free cyber security workshop aimed at small businesses in the region at the Yorkshire & Humber Fraud Forum’s Annual Conference. The November 10 event runs at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield.
The Business Crime Reduction Centre, which seeks to assist small and medium sized businesses, will provide an overview of the current threats related to the internet and trading online. With computers and the data they hold becoming ever more important for all businesses, the need for cyber security has never been more vital, it’s claimed.
David Ransom, Director of the Business Crime Reduction Centre said: “We have been delighted by the level of demand to attend the cyber security workshop. It is much needed because we know from our diagnosis of individual businesses that there remains a high level of unawareness of the growing and constantly changing threats.”
The workshop allows delegates to gain knowledge in applying basic security measures such as how to encrypt data. Attendees are all given a ‘jargon buster’, which provides delegates with an explanation of the world of Botnets, Trojans, Rootkits and other forms of malware.
Mr Ransom added: ”As we move more toward a knowledge based economy the need for businesses of all sizes to protect themselves from internal and external threats of data theft is crucial. Sadly some firms either don’t have the technical expertise to protect themselves or are simply unaware of the risks they are running”
Jim Farmery, Assistant Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward, the Regional Development Agency which funds the BCRC, said: “The business benefits that trading on line can bring to a company are enormous. By understanding the cyber security threats and working with the Business Crime Reduction Centre regional businesses can make themselves more aware of the risks and ensure they minimise the threat of becoming a victim of crime.”
