Cycle Protection

by Msecadm4921

A topic in the March print issue of Professional Security magazine is protection of bicycles on a UK university campus.

Meanwhile students are being advised by Greater Manchester Police to ensure that they lock their bicycles when leaving them unattended.

Between 1 April 2010 to 16 February 2011 643 bikes were stolen in the Metropolitan Division area, a two per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Inspector Rick Webb of GMP said: “Victims of bike theft are very often young people and students and having their bike stolen can affect their ability to get to school, university or work.

“People can help reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime by always locking their bike to something fixed or bulky and using a good standard bicycle lock even when leaving it in a shed or garage.

“People should also have their bike engraved with their postcode. Some bike shops offer this service for a small fee and many neighbourhood policing teams run free bike marking events.

“Alternatively people can register their bike on immobilise.com a free online national database that police can access and compare registered items against property that has been found or recovered from suspected criminals so that they can be returned to their rightful owners.”
