Shearline Precision Engineering (www.shearline.co.uk), a manufacturer, is producing detection unit cabinets and other machined parts for Scanna MSC, a supplier of screening equipment for letterbomb, contraband and explosives detection.
Shearline and Scanna have been working together since the beginning of last year, manufacturing a number of products from ICU box assemblies to detection unit cabinets. The relationship between the two companies has been strengthened further, the firms say, as Scanna has just renewed Shearline’s contract to produce the Scanmax 25 cabinets on a 12 month call-off arrangement, manufacturing to a schedule rather than order to order. The Scanmax 25 is a cabinet x-ray postal scanner for bundles of letters, courier deliveries, parcels and handbags, used worldwide to detect an item that is considered a possible threat. The Scanmax 25 can be used in airports, railway stations, large office blocks, the firms say. The cabinets for the Scanmax 25 parcel x-ray scanner are laser cut, punched, folded, stud inserted, welded, cleaned, painted, lead-lined and assembled by Shearline at its factory in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Final assembly by Scanna involves electronics, camera and mirror plate before shipment to the end customer.
What they say
“Our relationship with Scanna has gone from strength to strength. Having the cabinets for the Scanmax 25 on a call-off arrangement gives Scanna the confidence of a predictable supply chain, both in terms of timing and quality,” says Graham Smith, Managing Director of Shearline Precision Engineering. Shearline also manufactures a cable reel assembly located on the Scantrack digital portable x-ray system. This is a portable x-ray viewer used by police, military, EOD, customs, law enforcement agencies, prisons and building security managers. Individual parts are manufactured by Shearline by machining or sheet metal means, then painted and supplied to Scanna for assembling on to the Scantrak product. Richard Hughes, Technical Director at Scanna MSC, reports he is delighted with Shearline’s performance: “The contract has built up gradually to the current production level of 10 cabinets a month, along with the other pieces manufactured for the Scantrak system and the various ICU box assemblies. Shearline produces excellent products at competitive prices. It is reassuring to know that we have a supplier we can rely on for quality and speed.”
