Directors Change Jobs

Of the 2,658 UK directors of companies in the security industry, one in seven – 14 per cent – changed jobs last year, an industry analysis suggests.

Of the 2,658 UK directors of companies in the security industry, one in seven – 14 per cent – changed jobs last year.

How do all of these different personalities affect the individual companies they are working for and shape the industry? So ask industry analysts Plimsoll. Their study of almost 1,000 companies and their directors in the security industry found that the average director in the security industry is aged 50 and has been in the job for over six years. The average salary is ล“46,000 a year.

Despite this 14 per cent yearly turnover of directors almost 27 per cent or 718 directors have held their position for more than 10 years. 504 (or 19 per cent) of UK directors in the security industry are now over 60. Over the next three to five years, as these bastions of the industry reach retirement age, there could be a profound effect on the companies they formerly controlled. Of the 323 companies
where these over 60s work, almost 43 per cent are running successful companies, near the industry average.

What are the chances of a company selling up because the directors are getting long in the tooth? It is certainly a scenario that predators look for. Plimsoll names 91 companies where every board member is over 55. While there can be no one reason why a company achieves high sales growth, Plimsoll name 273 directors that since their appointment have been able to increase sales year on year. For 24 directors, this is the third year their company’s sales have increased. One in four UK security industry firms have appointed directors within the last 24 months – for 30 companies it represents a whole new board. Some 162 directors are under 35 with 34 per cent of these working at successful companies. Some 72 of these ?young guns? have been appointed in the last two years.
Arguably, it is not the companies that perform well but the directors, the report says. See www.plimsoll.co.uk.
