A new British Standard for door supervisors, replacing the 1999 one, has been published – BS 7960:2005.
BSI Business Information say that the code of practice gives recommendations, for the organisation, staffing, operation and management of companies providing door supervision services to licensed premises or events. BSI add that the code also gives recommendations for anyone who provides or employs door supervisors.
This standard has been newly revised, the British Standards body adds, to take account of changes in UK legislation through the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The Act requires, the BSI adds, that any person engaged in licensable activities, be licensed in accordance with the Act. It is an offence to engage in licensable conduct when not in possession of the appropriate licence. The standard covers details such as:
How the organization is structured, including operating a complaints management system
Insurance cover
How companies should make service calls
What information should be supplied to prospective clients before providing the service, including details on uniform, terms and conditions of employment, and references
Carrying out a risk assessment of the licensed premises
Contingency plans in the event of an incident
Terms of employment
Contracts between parties
Selection and screening of staff.
It supersedes BS 7960:1999 which is withdrawn. Price is £64 plus post and packaging, £32 BSI subscribing members.
