Microsoft recently claimed that they handled about 3.1 million internal emails every day, across their 52,000 mailboxes, say internet security firm Baltimore. Internal e-mail is posing a greater threat to an organisation than ever, Baltimore argue, having released MAILsweeper for Exchange 2000, an e-mail content security solution for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server users. Gary Thomassen of Baltimore says: ?It is easy to think that e-mail based threats to your organisation relate only to internet e-mail because of the high profile of virus outbreaks. However, internal e-mail issues such as bandwidth hogging message attachments, harassment and confidentiality breaches can result in reduced employee productivity, hostile work environments and multi-million dollar financial losses.? MAILsweeper for Exchange 2000 enables administrators to define and enforce policies on e-mail sent between individuals, groups, departments or to the entire organization. For example, administrators can uniformly apply anti-virus scanning policies to all e-mail passing through Exchange servers or establish policies limiting the distribution of large video files with the exception of specific marketing promotions.
