Electrical security installer Secom plc has produced a free booklet highlighting measures that organisations such as businesses and schools can take to prepare for emergency situations.
Secom says it has observed that many organisations do not have an effective or up to date strategy for coping in such a situation. The guide outlines what businesses need to be thinking about when preparing emergency procedures – stressing the importance of constant vigilance among all staff. An organisation needs to know where its weaknesses are; it must evaluate possible threats and then prepare a formal risk/emergency plan. The plan should include details such as nominating staff to manage emergency evacuation and communications, encouraging security awareness and enabling staff to voice any concerns in confidence, as well as considering the role of your security staff.
Updating an existing contingency plan or creating one for the first time can be a daunting task. The brochure has a pro forma draft emergency plan. It lists important aspects to plan for, such as whom to contact in an emergency, levels of disruption to the business, back up for IT, contacting suppliers and customers as well as neighbouring businesses.
