Essex Detective

by msecadm4921

A woman from Harlow has won a stereo system after playing detective at a fake burglary scene in the town centre.

In a competition run by Crimestoppers with a local newspaper, empty shop premises in Little Walk were transformed into a scene of crime. Passers-by had to find the clue left behind by the burglar and also had the opportunity to receive home security advice from the Safer Harlow Partnership. Eileen Kingston correctly guessed the item was an aerosol can and was presented with her prize by Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Coltman.

The 52-year-old winner said:’I saw the competition in the Harlow Star and went out to view the shop to see if I could spot the clue. I’ve been a victim of crime in the past and was really keen on taking part. The red paint sprayed on the wall just caught my eye as did the fingerprints on the can. I got back and filled in the coupon. I can’t believe I won.’ As part of the partnership’s on-going crackdown on burglary, police teamed up with the crime-solving charity and the public to make a difference.

Inspector Tracey Sanders said: "Often, it is those people with the most relevant information who can’t be seen to contact the police or are fearful of doing so. Crimestoppers protects the callers identity but frequently means we can still act on the information given and help the whole community." Thanks to individual callers to Crimestoppers, 64 arrests were made in Essex last year and
£3.75 million pounds of property and drugs were recovered.
