File Risk

by Msecadm4921

St Bernard Software warns that 60 per cent of UK companies risk significant file corruption during routine data back-up procedures because they don’t save files that are open and in use.

The organisations most susceptible to back-up tape corruption are those with 24/7 operations, such as banks and financial service providers, international conglomerates, central and local government bodies. St Bernard also warns that the extension of trading hours, mainly through the introduction of web-based transactions, has exacerbated the problem, particularly within the retail sector.

"Traditionally, data back-up activities were performed overnight when most applications lay dormant," said John Tomlinson, managing director EMEA at St Bernard Software. "However, the introduction of centralised data repositories for global companies has made regular, scheduled downtime a thing of the past. For most Fortune 500 companies, the sun never sets on their operations. According to St Bernard, the lack of awareness about open file back-up protection presents an untapped market for channel resellers and software distributors providing disaster recovery solutions. "We’ve been selling Open File Manager directly to end users, and shipping our software to OEM developers and a limited group of resellers for a number of years, but there are still huge opportunities for channel growth," added Tomlinson. "There is a proven market for this type of software with attractive margins available to the right partners."
