The City of London may only be ‘one square mile’ but it has its own police force, separate from the Metropolitan Police. The City Police, as well as safeguarding the Square Mile and its 9,000 residents, 320,000 workers and the visitors that to landmarks such as St Paul’s and Tower Bridge, specialises in economic crime.
Its headquarters on Wood Street, around the corner from the Guildhall, houses a small museum dedicated to the history of crime and policing in the City of London. The museum offers insight into the deeds of criminals and villains, from Jack the Ripper to the Latvian revolutionary Peter the Painter, and takes a look at the lives of the men and women who have guarded the City of London since 1839.
