In 1379 a bailiff was charged with making sure the 200 people who lived in Ryde – on the Isle of Wight – behaved themselves. Now, some 15 colour CCTV cameras do the job – with the local police – and watch over some 30,000 residents and many more thousands of tourists who flock to the island during the summer. A Medina Council spokesman says: ?When Ryde is busy in the summer it is very busy indeed and that?s when we need the CCTV system to monitor traffic flow and keep and eye on sea front entertainment sites.? Ken Tremain, general manager of Pentax CCTV and inspection division, said the spacing of the cameras need powerful lens capabilities to clearly pick up incidents along the Ryde sea front. He added: ?They have to cover the ferry port and railway as well as the busy entertainment centres and instead of a multitude of cameras they have opted for a lens solution.?
