Lock it or lose it – that’s the message from police as drivers are warned to take care of their vehicles during frosty mornings.
The warning to motorists during this cold snap is to beat car thieves at their own game by not leaving vehicles running while unattended.
Some motorists become careless and leave keys in their ignitions as they warm their vehicles. Others leave the engine running in their parked vehicles as they go back inside the house and wait for their vehicle to de-ice. Victims who have had their car stolen in this way include the Burton Albion football club manager Paul Peschisolido.
Chief Inspector Matt Markham, from West Midlands Police, said: "The simple message from the police is do not leave a car running unattended for any length of time whether it is left on your own driveway to de-frost it on cold winter mornings or to pop into a shop or post a letter.
"There are people who will steal if the opportunity presents itself and others who deliberately go in search of such opportunities – please do not give anyone the chance to steal your property."
Police have also urged motorists not to take any risks with their safety or the safety of others by clearing their windscreens properly before they drive.
