The TUC is urging employers – including those in the security industry – to give a new start to ex-offenders.
The TUC argues that someone who has been to prison has already been punished for their crime, and punishing them a second time, without reference to the courts, would be unfair; and the TUC suggests that getting ex-offenders into jobs is a good way to reduce the chances that they will offend again. Only three to four per cent of crimes against individuals and their property result in a conviction or caution, the TUC points out. TUC General Secretary John Monks said: ?And there?s a strong business case for fair treatment – many workers with a criminal record are valued employees, contributing to the success of their company.? Exceptions, where people have to declare spent convictions are jobs involving national security; working with people under 18; social services; the administration of justice (including police officers, probation officers, traffic wardens); and professions which have legal protection.
