G4S Gurkha Services has raised over £1,300 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust at the company’s innaugural tug of war competition.
The venue was the grounds of Manor Park in Sutton. It is expected that this amount will also be enhanced by G4S’s various sponsorship schemes to match the amount raised by its employees.
With 18 teams from G4S competing, G4S employees cheered on their colleagues, and enjoyed a traditional Gurkha lunch laid on by the British Army.
John Whitwam, Managing Director, G4S Gurkha Services presented competition winners the PDT Team (a team of Gurkhas from its Pre-Deployment Training contract) with their prize, and also the runners up with their very own Kukris (the traditional weapon of the Gurkhas).
Whitwam said: “It’s really fantastic to see so many of our employees getting involved. This has been an enjoyable way to get together and raise money for a worthy cause. It comes as little surprise that the PDT won, albeit against very spirited opposition. I hope with some more training another team may win the day next year. The event has proved so successful that it is now to be an annual event for us at G4S.”
The Gurkha Welfare Trust’s remit is to provide financial, medical and community aid to alleviate hardship and distress among Gurkha ex-servicemen of the British Crown and their dependants after they have returned to their homeland of Nepal.
Formed in 2007, G4S Gurkha Services provides managed teams of Gurkha officers for a range of security locations and tasks, including pre-deployment training for the British Army and protection of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI).
