Peterborough Evening Partnership have put up four emergency help point signs in the city centre.
Their aim: to reduce fear of crime in the city centre on an evening.
The help point signs have been placed near four designated telephone kiosks in the city centre, and aim to encourage anyone who feels threatened or in danger during a night out, when the pubs and clubs have closed, can use one of the kiosks. Each is in a well lit area, the partnership adds, and is covered by the city’s CCTV, which makes tracing an individual easier for police.
Sally Davies, from the community safety unit in Peterborough, said: "Obviously when the evening venues are open, we recommend that people seek help from staff in the licensed premises or food outlets. However, we know that there are often people still in the city centre when these places have closed. We hope that those in the city centre who need help quickly will use the areas to request help and remain there until the police arrive."
The emergency help points and telephone kiosks are in Cathedral Square, on the corner of Fitzwilliam Street, Laxton Square and Westgate (next to the taxi rank).
Sally added: "We hope the signs and kiosks will provide additional reassurance that in a genuine emergency and when there is perhaps no-one else around to help, that there is somewhere where their safety can be monitored until the police arrive."
