The Applied Criminology Centre (ACC) at the University of Huddersfield will host the 2008 British Society of Criminology (BSC) Conference next month.
The BSC aims to further the interests and knowledge of both academics and professionals who are engaged in criminological research and education.
This event will highlight contemporary research in areas such as crime prevention, youth justice and the rehabilitation of offenders, and will provide a forum for debate between academics, practitioners and policy makers.
Prof Alex Hirschfield, Director of the ACC, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to raise the profile of the University and that of Huddersfield. It’s an honour to host this highly prestigious event.
“Criminology is such a topical subject that there is hardly a day that goes by when it is not the lead story on TV or in newspaper headlines. That’s all the more reason to be objective about what’s going on, to avoid exaggerating the risks of being caught up in crime. Criminology can help keep our feet firmly on the ground when it comes to crime.”
Members of the ACC will present their research covering all aspects of Criminology, from crime prevention, policing and prisons, to surveillance, anti-social behaviour and counter terrorism. There is even a session on crimes against the environment; the new area of ‘Green Criminology’.
This international event boasts over 350 delegates from all over the world, including plenary speakers Prof Julian Roberts from Oxford University, Sandra Walklate from the University of Liverpool and Martin Narey, the Chief Executive of Barnados.
