Arson attacks traditionally peak in the run up to Bonfire Night with many people and properties being targeted through the letterbox causing fear, serious damage and potential loss of life.
The Safety Letterbox Company created its lockable letterflap – Flaplock – to secure this 24-hour a day vulnerable entry point on any building and prevent unwanted items such as fireworks or flammable materials being deposited through the door.
Developed following demand from Arson Task Force teams across the UK, it provides the makers say an affordable, practical and Police Preferred Specification security solution to protect homes and firms from criminal intrusion.
Flaplock can be fitted in minutes onto any entrance door, effectively sealing the letterbox against access. It provides instant peace of mind for residents, landlords and business owners in vulnerable communities across the UK.
Two options are available, a standard domestic product and a stronger commercial version holding a Secured by Design licence – the official UK police approval for security products. Flaplock is mounted on the inside of an external door using four dome-headed bolts which travel through the door and is locked securely by steel pegs to resist attack.
Demand for Flaplocks is increasing, according to Alison Orrells, Managing Director of The Safety Letterbox Company – the UK manufacturer and supplier of lockable mailbox systems and letterbox anti-arson solutions. “Arson has been recognised as one of the most destructive and distressing of all crimes and ultimately can lead to loss of life, serious injuries and a substantial cost to the economy. We developed Flaplock, along with other associated products, as an effective solution to combat this ever-present crime threat,” says Alison.
“Flaplock has already provided peace of mind and additional security for so many people living in fear of intimidation and threats. It is now used by fire and police teams, plus domestic customers who can order online.”
She adds: “Invariably, Flaplock is fitted to homes and businesses in response to threats, such as arson, or after such attacks. The feedback has been staggering, so many people living in fear who can now be reassured and protected with this simple solution.” The commercial Flaplock FL05 is specified in Section 21 of SBD New Homes 2010 – a guidance document published by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
Supplied with fitting instructions, Flaplock FL05 also carries LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) certification 1175 Issue 6, Security Level 1. It can be left locked or unlocked to suit. When locked at all times, an individual mailbox such as a Eurobox can be fixed to an external wall to receive mail delivery.
