May Day, London

May Day, central London: not a place for the faint-hearted. That was the day First Security began the contract for protecting central city properties for BH&S Property Management. Keith Barron of BH&S says: ?Three of our sites are in New Bond Street which was right in the middle of the protest area. First Security guards on the day acted in a calm manner to ensure all our sites were secure. They took it all in their stride and played a key role in eliminating any potential incidents from occurring.? The London EC1-based security firm won the contract to protect nine commercial office buildings – four in the City, five in the West End and Mayfair – in April. The properties vary in size as do their security requirements: some need a team of guards 24-hours, while others are sole-guarded. In total more than 40 staff are used to guard the places. Keith Barron adds: ?We have worked with First Security since 1997 and have been happy with their procedures. They have sensible pay and charge rates, and have understood what we are looking for and have provided it at a competitive price.?

At manned guarding firm First Security, Dave Peace has won the title of 2002 Security Officer of the Year Award out of 2,000 guards. Dave, who joined the London-based company in July 1990, has worked on a number of sites, including the company?s head office, but his work with the Royal Opera House has been singled out. Michael Godsalve, Facilities Administration Manager at the ROH says: ?Ever since the House re-opened in 1999, Dave Peace, who is one of four supervisors, has provided the experience, commitment and drive which we were looking for. This re-launch of such a high profile site was extremely fraught and needed a high calibre of person to ensure that not only were all of our requirements met but also that any observations or comments would be forthcoming. Whenever Dave is on duty, his team can expect a leader who is firm but fair, and our in-house staff always receive a smile and an answer to any of the problems that are presented to him.? Before joining the Royal Opera House, Dave worked in roles including controller, superviser, mobile patroller, mobile patrol superviser, and shift leader.
