New Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service Sir Ian Blair describes how among his aims is to build stronger links with Londoners.
With over 30,000 police officers and 2,000 police community support officers, we now have the resources to go further and further towards our ambition to make London the safest major city in the world.
We know people do not define how safe they feel by crime statistics alone. They define it by how their neighbourhood, their journey to work and their leisure time is affected by so-called antisocial behaviour.
I aim to tackle this kind of yobbery through Safer Neighbourhoods – dedicated teams of police officers and police staff who will patrol every council ward in London – supported by local borough police officers and the resources of the entire Metropolitan Police Service.
At the same time, we will not relent on more serious crime. We will take on prolific offenders, particularly those whose crimes are fuelled by drugs. We will continue to make a concerted effort to defeat the people of violence, whether domestic violence or the gun culture emerging in so many of our communities. And we will do our utmost to keep Londoners safe from those who would carry out terrorist acts.
If we are to be successful, we must work closer together with you, doing more to follow up on your initial enquiry, ensuring that, as far as possible, you are satisfied with what you have been told and keep you informed of what is going on.
