Installer Euro Security Systems has gained a two-year contract to act as data co-ordinator for oil firm Exxon. Euro will offer a one-stop shop service to Esso service stations so that they meet the CCTV side of the Data Protection Act (DPA). Una Riley, Euro Managing Director, explained that Exxon remains the data controller as defined by the DPA. In fact, the managers of each service station are the data controller for their operation, though they are not CCTV specialists. Euro has put together a pack making data protection guidelines and procedures as straightforward as possible, from managing tapes to use of evidence bags and dealing with the rights of a data subject to look at a CCTV recording. In the event of a data subject making a request, Euro process that request on behalf of the client. Una pointed out that while many organisations have come to terms with the DPA, they may only have done so with administrative data such as accounts and customer details, overlooking the fact that CCTV images are data too.
