One In Three Pirates

An industry survey reported in 2001 that one in three of all CDs sold around the world is a pirate copy. So points out internet fraud legal expert Steven Philippsohn. He says: ?The pirate CD market is worth an estimated œ3.1billion. In the UK 1.7 per cent of music sales involve piracy, however given that legitimate album sales topped œ1billion in a year, the sums of money involved in piracy are vast. Internet piracy is considered to be making the problem even harder to control. It is difficult to enforce national law over the internet due to jurisdictional problems. The effect of internet piracy is considered to be an even greater disaster for the music industry and artists than the sale of copied CDs. Industry leaders are calling for a global strategy to combat an international problem. The call for strategy in combating internet based crime is a theme repeated in the EU proposals for cybercrime prevention. The problems of controlling use of the internet have far wider implications than the music industry. It is yet another example that demonstrates harmonisation of international law, co-operation of law enforcement agencies and most importantly effective prosecution through the criminal and civil courts are the keys to preventing internet crime.?
