Security for the new Barton Grange Garden Centre has been installed by Chubb Security. It’s part of a multi-million pound development.

The Garden Centre, recently opened by HRH the Princess Royal, is a £15m leisure facility, which also includes an 80-berth narrow boat marina on the Lancaster Canal. The new system includes CCTV integrated with the centre’s EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) retail technology.

Covering some 12,000 square metres on a 50 acre site, protecting the centre was a priority, as Administrative Services Manager for The Barton Grange Group, Adrian Gilchrist, says: “We put a great deal of time and effort into finding the best way to protect and monitor the complex. We approached various suppliers, both big and small, and asked them to give us their recommendations as to the best solution.

“We wanted ultimately to find a single supplier who could fulfil all our needs,” Adrian says, “as having a reliable single supplier is easier in terms of project management than relying on several different contractors. Chubb offered us the classic one-stop-shop, with the balance of expertise and resource to cover the site, and the name and reputation to match. Having the Chubb brand name on the CCTV cameras, for example, instantly says that we take security seriously.

“Chubb also offered us greater flexibility with the ability to maintain an ‘open’ system,” he adds, “which means we can expand the system using third-party technology if we need, without being tied to one single manufacturer.

“The customer service we received was also a boost. We worked very closely with David Richards whose attention to detail, and engineering background, meant we received the best advice at all times.”

The technology chosen includes a new PX500 intruder alarm with RedCare GSM, access control with an internal fob system to monitor time and attendance, and some 60 fixed and PTZ CCTV cameras to remotely monitor and record activity across the site.

“The cameras are linked to Chubb’s own remote video surveillance centre,” adds Adrian. “This means that if an intruder enters the premises a keyholder will be alerted. Images from the cameras can be monitored over the network via a PC to ensure smooth day-to-day running, and the cameras are also linked to a team network cash-till system. That means we can monitor each till, linking images to the data from the EPOS system to ensure that any unusual or unexpected transactions can be readily traced. We requested this as an addition to the system and again Chubb was able to oblige accordingly.

“The level of expertise, flexibility and attention to detail that Chubb Security offered us was excellent on such a complex multi-faceted system, and I would highly recommend them,” concludes Adrian.
