OmniPerception Ltd, the British facial biometrics company, has backed the views recently expressed on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 about the facial biometric technology imported from America for use in the recent British passport trials; that it is just not accurate enough for use in real passports.
The Today programme reported that a recent trial in Europe and the UK, using facial biometric technology, has found that the computerised scans failed in up to 20 per cent of the cases.
David McIntosh, the CEO of OmniPerception said: "The publicising of these findings confirms that the current biometric technology being offered for use in passports is simply not accurate, nor robust enough to do the job. The American biometric community has made a tremendous contribution over the years, particularly in the area of fingerprinting, but when it comes to modern computerised face recognition, our British products are in a different league. It’s simply a matter of better underlying technology.”
