PFI Business

by msecadm4921

The growth of Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) to fund new building projects is leading to business for a Leeds based engineering company.

Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd reports increased opportunities to supply its new custodial Kaye Class 1 Cell Lock to new build prisons and police stations. This business growth comes as a result of the company being included on the database of suitable products that can now be considered for use in future PFI contracts for prison and police applications.

Already, working with architects and contractors, Pickersgill-Kaye reports that it has installed the Class 1 lock in a number of new facilities around the UK. Installations include a prestigious new high security police headquarters in the north east of England, and the new Basildon police station custody suite. Other projects include high usage police cells in locations in London and Northern Ireland, with further projects under way.

The Kaye Class 1 lock was developed by Pickersgill-Kaye over two years. A new specification for custodial doors, SS317 – the first official standard in the custodial industry – was also created and the Kaye lock was tested against this standard. Amongst the tests carried out were 300,000 handle operations and door slams, 100,000 key operations as well as the lock’s resistance to a 12- hour saw attach, a side load on the deadbolt of 13.5kN and an end load on the deadbolt of 25kN.

What they say

Pickersgill-Kaye’s business development manager for security and engineering products, John Moore, said: "The whole area of custodial and high security locks is undergoing substantial and exciting change because suppliers such as ourselves will now be able to compete for new opportunities offered in future PFI projects. We are currently working closely with a number of consortia across the UK, developing solutions to meet their requirements. In addition to the Class 1 Cell Lock, we are, with our software partners, in the final testing stages of an electromechanical version, K-Interactive – "The Electronic Lock Solution"."
