Following the terrorist attacks on London’s transport system, GNER staff and British Transport Police report that they are maintaining a heightened vigilance on station platforms and on board trains.
East coast train operator GNER is reminding passengers using its trains and stations to keep luggage with them at all times – and so minimise the risk of delay caused by security alerts.
Even so, delays have been caused due to unattended luggage and passengers have been inconvenienced – hence GNER is appealing to everyone to help by keeping an eye on belongings while on stations or trains.
What they say
"We normally remind all passengers to keep luggage with them at all times, and that unattended luggage could be removed or destroyed by the British Transport Police", GNER’s chief operating officer Jonathan Metcalfe says.
"Clearly following the recent events in London, there is a greater potential for delay due to security alerts. We know that passengers will understand the reason for increased vigilance."
Passengers are encouraged to report any unattended items of luggage, or anything suspicious, to station or on-train staff.
"If anyone is in any doubt about an item of unattended luggage, our advice is not to touch it but instead to tell our staff who have specific training in what actions to take," says Mr Metcalfe.
"We’re asking rail passengers to join with us and help to minimise any risk of unnecessary delays due to security checks. Our staff are working hard to achieve this, and with the support of rail passengers, we will keep the railway moving."
