Pubwatch Relaunch

by Msecadm4921

In Shropshire, licensees in Whitchurch are being urged to support the relaunch of the town’s Pubwatch scheme. The scheme was set up four years ago with 19 member premises but interest has since waned.

Shropshire’s Best Bar None and Pubwatch co-ordinator Kelly Harris is working with the area’s Local Policing Teams to sign-up new members and to rekindle interest.

A Whitchurch Pubwatch relaunch meeting is being held at The Wheatsheaf run by landlady June England, at 10am on Tuesday, September 28.

"We would like to see all licensees from the area attending, including pubs, restaurants, clubs, supermarkets and off-licences," said Ms Harris.
"There are definite benefits in being members of an effective pubwatch scheme and that is what we want to establish for Whitchurch town and the surrounding area."
Community Support Officer Graeme Baines has been trying to promote interest but an initial letter sent to all licensees in the town produced little feedback.
CSO Baines, together with Ms Harris have since adopted a more personal approach by making direct contact to emphasise their plea.
"Because licensees were not particularly forthcoming, we have been calling at licensed premises trying to whip up enthusiasm and urging those involved in the licensed trade locally to attend the relaunch meeting.
"We hope to see as many licensees as possible at the first meeting, working our way back up to the number in the scheme when it was launched in 2006."
She said: "There are real benefits to be gained for members and it’s really in their interests to join and play an active role. The Local Policing Team realise how valuable it is to work with their local licensees in Whitchurch and surrounding area in combating alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and underage drinking."
