Project managers behind the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester have had car park security advice from a near neighbour … Manchester United Football Club. IWM North, at Salford Quays, is due to open in 2002. An award-winning design, the museum stands by the Manchester Ship Canal and opposite the Lowry Centre, featured in our September 2000 issue. IWM Head of Support Services Gerry McCartney told Professional Security that Manchester United had warned that on match days supporters might seek to park at the IWM North and walk on to the ground – potentially denying access to genuine visitors to the free museum. Hence visitors will have to enter the museum site through some control mechanism, paying by token or at a pay and display machine. The Museum is in talks with Man Utd towards using one of the Old Trafford club’s car parks for weekday school coaches, when the soccer club’s parking is less used.
