Register Proposed

by Msecadm4921

A Register of Chartered Security Practitioners has been proposed by the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals.

This was announced by Don Randall MBE, the new Company Master, at his official appointment at a Company lunch in London on June 9. Don Randall reported agreement with The Security Institute for TSI to design, manage and operate the register on behalf of the Company. Institute chairman Mike Bluestone hailed this as ‘a major milestone in developing a cohesive and professional approach in the security sector, and is the culmination of months of negotiation between the two organisations’. He said: “In practice, this announcement marks the start of the implementation phase of the register, which is projected to open for applications in the first quarter of 2011 … This work is in addition to the groundwork currently being carried out which will enable us to apply for our own Royal Charter.” An article by Peter French and Richard Flenley in our December 2006 issue made a case for the security sector to seek chartered status. Briefly as background: many professions are chartered – engineering and accountancy to name two – which requires people so chartered to have at least a first-level degree, and experience, and uphold standards of professional conduct, among other things. The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors starts in October. As that institute (like TSI) says, gaining chartered status raises a profession’s profile, and shows competence and a commitment to a code of ethics.
