Recent high profile power failures in central London data centres have highlighted the need for organisations to consider not only the cost per kilowatt for their server racks, but also the resilience of the power supply.
So says Paul Lightfoot, Chief Technology Officer at The Bunker, a provider of data centres and managed services. He comments:
โThe cost savings from IT outsourcing are too great to ignore, but these can quickly be undone if there is a break in service. While it might feel convenient having a data centre in the heart of London, power supply has a higher risk of interruption due to the huge draw on supplies and the major civil engineering projects that seem to be continually underway โ increasing demand and creating a risk of interruption from accidental cuts through cables. Furthermore, mega-events such as the 2012 Olympics could also result in further power fluctuations or interruptions.โ
