Right Supplier

by Msecadm4921

Whenever a company chooses to implement a security system, one factor to ensure the project’s success is working with the right supplier to deliver, install and maintain the underlying networking infrastructure, says systems integrator Telindus.

Choosing and integrating the best products that can benefit the easier deployment of CCTV is the role of the network integrator. As with CCTV system deployment, the security installer develops the solution from its list of suppliers. The network industry has its own suppliers and markets: names such a Cisco, Marconi are well known and many others exist.

It is best to use specialist consultants in the field of networking technology. If the network that transmits and supports the solution is not right, it is a fair assumption that the solution will not achieve optimum performance and so not deliver true return on investment. Even where an organisation already has a network, is this network – which in all probability was designed for data and perhaps voice- the correct design to support video’ It is unlikely that any existing infrastructure can effectively support a new medium without some form of modification.

Without this, there is a very real danger that the customer will end up with an inventory of equipment that does not deliver the security solution they were anticipating. Without a properly designed network infrastructure that takes into consideration factors – such as, how does the customer wants to use the system’ Is legacy kit is to be integrated’ What are the likely future expansion or changes to the organisation’ – there is a distinct possibility that the customer is left with a system that does not meet expectation and does not operate and communicate efficiently or effectively. Instead of the result being a strategic cohesive solution that delivers genuine benefit to the organisation, the customer is left with a white elephant.

Technically, security is a complex issue because in many instances customers have an existing network and legacy equipment that needs to be incorporated into the new system. In a green field installation, the question of what is the best overall technological solution needs to be addressed, as well as the project management issues (which often can be as daunting as the technical aspect!).

Many companies in the market today are great ‘general practitioners’ in the field of security, but how many of us would trust a GP to perform major surgery’ We go to our GP to discuss and investigate general symptoms but are invariably referred to a specialist consultant for further examination and diagnosis. We trust them to be a safe pair of hands ‘ they know what the treatment involves, have a proven track record in their field, are aware of the potential complications and can offer sound advise based on experience on how to speed up recuperation and gain the maximum benefit from the treatment. Moreover, they can put you in touch with other happy patients who have shared your experience and survived!

Although digital networked CCTV products have existed for some years it is still a relatively new market, which is a convergence of two specialised industries: digital networks installers and CCTV installers. There is low cross-fertilisation of expertise and experience between the two sectors. It is therefore almost impossible to find on company with the networking skills to manage the traffic on the network, to deliver the service levels, and have the understanding and of capability the CCTV security solution. Video images exhibit high demands on digital networks. The installer must provide for the quality of service required for the system. One consideration is ensuring that the images are received as quickly as possible, so that the latency is reduced and dexterity of pan and tilt control is maintained.

New technologies often present many benefits; however it is sensible to underwrite solutions by testing a solution before going ahead with a complete and maybe costly installation. Having the solution proved is advisable especially on large complex systems. The costs of proof of concept can seem to be expensive but less than the cost of replacing an ineffective system.
