Many towns and cities on a Friday and Satruday night have street pastors to look out for the welfare of revellers – now a student union is doing something similar.
Students in Buxton are taking to the streets tonight to help keep the town centre safe.
A group of ten volunteers from the University of Derbyโs Student Union will be stepping out for the first time as part of the Street Safe project.
As part of the initiative, supported by Derbyshire Police and the High Peak Community Safety Partnership, the student volunteers will look to help reduce anti-social behaviour and levels of noise which can be caused by night time revellers.
The students will be wearing high visibility jackets and will be carrying radios so they are in constant communication with police officers, door staff and other support workers.
They will also be looking to introduce designated โsafe spotsโ in the town, where the volunteers can take people for free drinking water and to call a friend or a taxi.
